As a kid, I tried to help fix our furnace without much luck

I distinctly remember a day when the furnace stopped working at our house. I was 12 years old, and I remember that the house began to grow colder. It was early in the morning on a Saturday, which meant that we wouldn’t be able to go to the school where the furnace would always be working. Our mom told us that we would have to bundle up and wait until the HVAC technician came to fix our furnace. I asked her when the HVAC technician was coming, and she told me that he might show up later that day or early the next day. I was cold, and I didn’t want to wait that long to have a working furnace. A few weeks prior, Christmas had happened, and I received a tool kit for Christmas. I had some basic tools, and I came up with what I thought would be a very clever idea. I was going to help fix the furnace so that our house wouldn’t be cold anymore. I snuck down into the basement where the furnace was located, and I used my screwdriver to take the cover off of the furnace. Thankfully, my dad had already turned the breaker off to the furnace, or I would have easily electrocuted myself at that moment. I began taking the furnace off piece by piece and inspected them. I didn’t know what I was looking for, but I figured that if I could find the broken part to the furnace, we could easily replace it and put it back together. Unfortunately, I broke one of the components, and I didn’t know how to hide it. My mom heard it, and she came down and realized what I was doing. I was grounded.
