Both of our parents are now in their 70s. Since I live nearby, I try to stop in as often as possible & offer our assistance with anything they need done around their house. It started with helping them put up holiday decorations one year; now, I do everything from cleaning their gutters to mowing their grass. The last thing I want is for one of them to fall from doing a chore that I could have done myself instead. I also started changing their Heating & A/C filters for them every week. I get a large pack in bulk from a close department store, then I store them in their utility closet. This has transitioned into me handling all of their Heating & A/C needs, and calling to schedule the service visits & enjoying their method for any malfunctioning. One source of frustration with their central heating & cooling method is their electric gas furnace. It is affixed to the air handler & uses the same air duct. The problem is how horribly inefficient it is to run, whether you look at the electricity costs or simply its effectiveness at warming up their home. This is precisely why so many people switch to radiant heat, bypassing any leaky air duct in the process. After a bit of consideration, I gave to pay to install radiant radiant heated floors in their house last year. I figured it would lower their utility bills & give them better joy from their indoor heating source. They both love the new heated flooring to death, especially knowing they can adjust it based on what room they’re in or what portions of the floor they want warm at any given time. The flexibility & efficacy of these radiant floors is simply unbelievable.
