Insurance Irony

Insurance is an ironic topic. At a blackjack table in Las Vegas, insurance means that if a dealer is showing an ace, you can bet an additional amount equal to half of the original bet to “insure” yourself against a dealer having a ten through king as the hidden card. If you win the insurance bet, you break even overall because you will probably lose your original bet to the dealer. If you lose the insurance bet, then your best outcome is to win the hand and gain only half of what you might have won had you not taken the insurance bet. With a homeowner’s insurance policy, the best outcome is to “lose” by not having any claims and continue paying the premium every month. If you “win”, that means your house has been damaged or destroyed by a fire or another calamity. For HVAC units, if a tree falls on your compressor or you have a fire that destroys the entire unit, you may have a valid claim. If it simply breaks down because of age, neglect, or wear and tear, then any claim will be rejected. New HVAC units should have a manufacturer’s warranty to take the place of insurance in the event of a breakdown. For older HVAC systems an extended warranty with a cleaning and maintenance plan will provide some protection. The worst choice a homeowner can make is to ignore the recommended maintenance and attempt to make repairs themselves. That will likely void any warranty and is the equivalent of saying “Hit me.” in blackjack when the dealer is showing a 3 through 6.
