Fountain of Youth

The Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon searched his entire life looking for the magical waters that would restore youth and vigor.

Little did he know that his unsuccessful quest would result in the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park in St.

Augustine, Florida. It is doubtful that the explorer ever visited, much less discovered a rejuvenating stream where the park sits today. In 1985 the movie Cocoon was released. The plot involves some pods that are placed by an alien race in a retirement home swimming pool that gives the waters the power to restore youth. Something about that movie must have had restorative powers in real life because the leading actors all lived into their 80s. Hume Cronyn lived to be 91. I think the secret to a long life is part genetic and part good luck. A “fountain of youth” would be an impressive discovery but I would prefer something that would add years to mechanical objects. For an automobile, that “something” is motor oil that is changed regularly. I have not yet discovered the magic elixir for central HVAC systems, but I know that it is not the mineral-rich waters from a Florida tourist attraction nor is it the waters from a fictional movie. For HVAC units the solution for a long life is not in a liquid form. It begins with an owner who takes the time to change the filters regularly, keeps the compressor unit free of dirt and leaves, and quickly responds to any needed repairs. More important is that the original installation, maintenance, cleaning, and repairs to an HVAC system are carried out by a well-qualified professional HVAC company with technicians trained in every aspect of HVAC care.
