The experience as an apprentice in the home comfort business

The apprenticeship was going on well, there was still so much to learn in the heating corp.

As apprentices we were required to learn and understand every heater for sale and furnace filter for sale or if not all the most common ones.

This would make it easier to communicate with homeowners about their ac and heating unit but more importantly to have an idea of possible problem areas. The best learning moments were not in those mini-lectures but tagging along with the senior heating technician. The very first job I attended, the homeowner had called to say that a very bad odor was coming out of the central heating system. At first, I found the dd in the boiler unit. On further inspection, the unit also needed a boiler repair because the rodent had chewed through some cables. I would never before have thought that working for a home comfort business could involve dealing with rodents or dead ones for that matter. The only time I went to a house alone was when delivering a furnace filter, the senior professional insisted that we had to deliver and help the homeowner to install it so that we could start getting a hang of the job. My favorite was attending a new HVAC installation where we the heating provider had to install even the ductwork. I was six months into my apprenticeship so I was able to be more involved in the process. I still remember when I installed a dial thermostat and fixed a fireplace that had a blocked gas pipe and my senior told me I had done a very good job. That built my confidence in the job and learning more about heating.
