Tear in ductwork

A few months ago, I was running the heat as usual, but it just seemed like the room was not maintaining a warm, even temperature.

I was spending more and more money on my energy bills and experiencing inconsistent temperatures.

Finally, I called an HVAC company and they informed me that I had a tear in my ductwork. Ductwork typically lasts about 20 years before it needs to be replaced, but you can see problems with deterioration after about 10 to 15 years. This was the first sign of deterioration for me, and I really was not interested in replacing my entire system of ductwork. I figured that I would be able to get a few more good years out of the current ductwork and decided to just take a stab at mending the ductwork myself. My home has flex ductwork, which has three layers. The problem with my duct was that there was an exposed duct collar because pressure had forced the outer liner and insulation layers away from the collar. I was able to do a little research online to figure out for to realign the layers to stop the duct from leaking. It took a bit of work and time, but it saved me a lot of money in the immediate future. In the long run, I will have to replace my ductwork a few years down the line, but at least I can prepare and save some money in advanced.
