Insurance Irony

Insurance is an ironic topic; At a blackjack table in Las Vegas, insurance means that if a supplier is showing an ace, you can bet an additional amount equal to half of the original bet to “insure” yourself against a supplier having a ten through king as the hidden card, if you win the insurance bet, you cut even overall because you will entirely lose your original bet to the dealer.

If you lose the insurance bet, then your best outcome is to win the hand plus receive only half of what you might have won had you not taken the insurance bet. With a homeowner’s insurance policy, the best outcome is to “lose” by not having any claims plus continue paying the premium every month. If you “win”, that means your house has been disfigured or destroyed by a fire or another calamity, however for HVAC units, if a tree falls on your compressor or you have a fire that destroys the entire unit, you may have a valid claim. If it simply breaks down because of age, neglect, or wear plus tear, then any claim will be rejected, but new HVAC units should have a manufacturer’s warranty to take the locale of insurance in the event of a breakdown. For older HVAC systems an extended warranty with a cleaning plus maintenance system will provide some protection, then the worst choice a homeowner can make is to ignore the proposed maintenance plus attempt to make repairs themselves. That will likely void any warranty plus is the equivalent of saying “Hit me.” in blackjack when the supplier is showing a 3 through 6.
