Old Home Benefits from Window A/C

About a year ago, my daughter moved about five hours away from me.

She chose to buy what most people think of as an “old style” southern house.

It is made of CBS block and is in a neighborhood of similar style homes. It is on the small side, as houses used to be back in the day. Her house was built in the 1940s, and back in those days, air conditioning was unheard of. I am not sure when a/c was invented, but it certainly wasn’t found in houses. Now, of course, no one would think of even trying to sell a house without air conditioning in this state. We are in the southeast, so we have high heat and high humidity. One thing we all agree on is that we need our a/c! Whoever owned my daughter’s house before she did was not as picky about the heating and cooling needs of the house, I suppose. She does have central heating and cooling, but even so, she never seems to really be cool enough during the summer months. She feels like it gets so hot outside that the HVAC just can’t keep up with the demand for cooled air. She would run her a/c all day and night, throughout the house, but then when the utility bill would arrive, she would suffer sticker shock. She debated a lot about what to do. When she called in the HVAC service company, they told her that the system just wasn’t adequate for the space. The previous owners had added on another room without increasing the HVAC unit. She didn’t have the money to put in HVAC with zone control or anything, so eventually she just decided to get a little window air conditioning unit and put it in her bedroom.
