The Evolution of my A/C Experience

I am at an age where I have seen a lot of changes.

  • When I got my first “real” job in an office, I was working on a typewriter.

We got a computer system later that year, but all we had was intranet, not internet. I think anyone much younger than I am would not even know what intranet is. I have also seen a lot as far as air conditioning goes. When I was very little, I lived up north, so there was no air conditioning at all. We had a furnace that used heating oil, and a big truck pulled up and put heating oil in a big tank in the ground. Some lucky people had window a/c units at that time, but not many. Then, I moved to the south. I discovered air conditioning at that time. Many houses had window air conditioners, but I was lucky. The house my mother rented had central air conditioning. My aunt still had no a/c, but she did have ceiling fans and box fans to help keep her cool. Ceiling fans were new to me; I had never seen one before! Central heating and cooling was the best you could do for many years, but then improvements came along. I have had HVAC with zone control for a little while now. That involves a/c sensors in the rooms. The a/c sensors detect whether people are in a room or not, and if not, the a/c turns off in that area. My brother now has the next newest thing. He has a mini split air conditioner, and it has an app that goes on his phone so he can adjust the thermostat from across the world if he so desires. My other brother has regular old central a/c, but he got a smart thermostat for it. The evolution of heating and cooling has been dramatic through my lifetime.
