Hard to get my head around a summer without HVAC

But lunchtime, it was all you could do to find a shady spot and deal with the heat of the day with a hope for a breeze.

My grandpa was just the best. The guy was such a character and had seen so much. The man was born at the turn of the 20th century and he lived to be 95. Can you imagine all the evolution across so many arenas that man witnessed? Not to mention the world wars and all the technological advances. One of his favorite things to pick on me about was my love of air conditioning. Our family is from the south and we have been in this very region for generation after generation spanning a couple hundred years anyway. My gramps would always give me a hard time in the summer when I chose to stay inside the air conditioning instead of sweating it out in the broiling sun outside. This seemed pretty common sense to me at the time and still does. While I love where I live, during the four months of summer, I stick to the HVAC cooling during the peak heating hours of the afternoon. My gramps would tell stories of how he grew up without any sort of air conditioning. They would have to get up at like 3 am to start the work around the farm. But lunchtime, it was all you could do to find a shady spot and deal with the heat of the day with a hope for a breeze. That just blows my mind but residential HVAC was readily available at all in this region until the 1950’s. Gramps would give me a hard time about the air conditioning with a twinkle in his eye. He sure enjoyed the HVAC cooling during the heat of the day as well.
