Avoid the Catastrophic HVAC Heating Fail

My beautiful wife often reminds me that I could sleep through a tornado going down the street in front of the house.

That seems a bit extreme but, I can sleep through a lot of noise.

Myself, I find this to be a very advantageous characteristic given all the stuff that is going on inside my home. Nearly a hundred percent of the time, I wake fully refreshed and ready to start the day. The only times that I don’t sleep through the night are the result of something bad happening. The last thing that woke me was the sound of my HVAC furnace grinding to a complete halt. Just before bed, I set the thermostat to 65 just like I do every night in the winter. Sometime after midnight, there was just the most awful banging sound. I could actually feel the commotion coming from the basement. I ran right downstairs only to see the last throes of my crippled furnace. There was nothing that I could do to get it to restart. My only choice was to call the local HVAC company to come out for an emergency service call. I quietly stood there kicking myself while I waited for the HVAC pro to show up. Things got busy and I forgot to schedule the fall time HVAC maintenance. I was just praying that the HVAC guy could fix the problem. However, I knew that either way it was going to cost me more than a few bucks. Middle of the night emergency HVAC service calls don’t come cheap. I know that 85 percent of all HVAC service calls can be prevented with regular, seasonal HVAC preventive maintenance.
