Smart thermostat is useful surveillance

When my wife said that she wanted to get a brand new thermostat for our 50 year old heating and cooling system I was absolutely baffled.

We have an ancient boiler system in our basement which still does an amazing job keeping our house warm and comfortable all winter.

We have a very basic air conditioning setup with a central AC unit we barely use and a few artifactual window units for the nights that we need additional cooling power. What would be the point of getting a new smart thermostat to control any part of these centralized HVAC devices? We have an old-school digital thermostat, I told her. It barely even operated alongside the rudimentary Heating and Cooling devices before… Why would we start upgrading the technology to be even more discrepant? And that’s when my wife told me the smartest thing I’ve ever heard. It’s not about the indoor air temperature control system, it’s about watching our kids when we aren’t at home. You see, my wife and I both work out of the house and regularly get stuck at the office late into the night. Sometimes, we can’t keep a good eye on our teens because both of us are out of the house. With a smart thermostat in place, however, we could see what they were doing. If they arrived home extremely late, the smart thermostat wouldn’t adjust the indoor air temperature until that point. If they were having a wild party, we would see all of the AC units come online. If they were smoking, the ventilation system would be in use. Thanks to my brilliant wife, I feel like a great parent.
