It’s one thing to have my wife’s mom living down here and right around the corner these days.
It’s another thing entirely for having her living inside the air conditioning of our home for an extended period of time. Were it not for the awesome HVAC professionals that have taken care of all our heating and cooling needs, that’s what would have happened. And I can assure you, I think I would have had to either hide or get my business travel on. I don’t know why exactly but my mother in law just really doesn’t care for me all that much. I was not the boy she had picked out for her daughter. It’s been a weird dance for the last 20 years and I find that keeping my distance is the best answer. When my wife’s dad died, I knew that her mom was going to be moving down here. It was inevitable and I had made peace with that given she’s family. So I even helped with finding a place and pointing out things to consider. The place my mother in law chose is just fine but I, along with the realtor, pointed out that the HVAC equipment was outdated. Of course, this probably only reinforced her to stick with the old HVAC equipment. Sure enough, last August, I got a call from my wife that her mom’s air conditioning was out and that she was staying with us. I immediately got on the horn to the HVAC company. They confirmed that the heat pump was shot. And it would be at least a month before they could get a new one. However, they offered to place portable air conditioning units in the house free of charge. That saved me.
