Thanksgiving was important to us.

Our last Thanksgiving at the family home was a bit unforgettable.

We were just about to put the food on the table when the power went out. The food was done, so we didn’t need to worry about anything spoiling. The biggest problem was that with the power out, we didn’t have any heating. Thankfully, it was still daytime, so we weren’t without light. There was plenty of sunshine once we opened up all the curtains. We sat around the table swaddled in blankets and eating our dinner. Throughout our meal, it just kept getting colder, and we were all hoping that the power would come back on, and the furnace would turn back on. We weren’t able to watch the football game on television, which had all the guys moaning the blues. In lieu of the television set, we opted to entertain ourselves. We came up with a robust and raucous game of charades. We were all doing our best dance moves. We weren’t just trying to get our team to guess what we were trying to tell them, but we were trying to stay warm. Even amidst all the fun, we were getting miserable as it got colder. Half an hour later, the furnace roared back to life. My dad was quick to turn the football game on. He was really upset about missing the first three quarters of the game until he noticed that his team was winning. In the fourth quarter, they still lost. I would rather see the team lose than have to go through another day without the furnace.
