Quitting smoking is hard, especially when it’s in the fireplace.

I had an extremely difficult time trying to quit smoking. It seemed that everything I tried to eat or do reminded me of smoking. I got up in the middle of the night and wanted to smoke a cigarette. I couldn’t think of anything that would be harder than when we tried to light the old fireplace. Trying to quit smoking in the fireplace was harder. I wanted to get the fireplace burning to help supplement the fuel bill. After the last time I had the oil tank filled, I swore I had to do something for heating, other than use the oil furnace. We had a fireplace, but it hadn’t been cleaned in quite some time. I thought that putting a fire in the hearth would clean the dirt from the chimney, but I was wrong. Not only was there a lot of smoke going out the chimney, but it was coming into the house. The fireplace was smoking so badly that I couldn’t see. My wife was coughing and opening all the windows and doors. Our ceiling fans were on high, but we needed something else. I couldn’t let the smoke stop me from using the fireplace. I was so intent on using the fireplace that I had given no thought to how my family was reacting to the smoke. After over an hour, I knew I had to do something else. I couldn’t just turn the fireplace out, but I put a screen in front of the fire. My wife thought I should pour water on the fire, but that would create more smoke. It took another hour for the flames to die down, and that was when I realized I hadn’t opened the flue.
